Introduction to Coaching: Definitions, Context and Applications

 

This session will explore what coaching is and what it isn’t, while considering the similarities and differences between helping roles within organisations. It will also cover some of the things which get in the way of having good coaching conversations.

 

By the end of this live session, your employees should be able to:

  • Define coaching and explain similarities and differences with other helping roles
  • Identify strategies to support better coaching conversations

How we Learn – The ‘I’

Unit 2 explores learning theories and brings them to life through real life examples. It offers the opportunity to observe a coaching demonstration from a professional coach.

 

By the end of this live session, your employees should be able to:

  • Use self-awareness of own behaviours, values and beliefs to support the relationship with others
  • Describe a coaching model and plan for its use
  • Observe a coaching (with contracting) session and contribute to a reflective debrief

Self-study

 

  • Consolidate learning from Unit 2 by completing a business-facing activity set by the tutor
  • Preparatory work for Unit 3, making use of prescribed materials
  • A focus on GROW through practice, bias theory and judgement

Contracting and Coaching Practice – The ‘We’

 

Employees will learn more about contracting for coaching and considerations to make when coaching within the organisation. This session offers an opportunity to practise coaching skills with others on the programme and receive feedback.

By the end of this live session, your employees should be able to

:

  • Identify key considerations to make when contracting with others
  • Practise coaching skills and receive feedback from others
  • Observe others practise and contribute to a reflective discussion

Self-study

  • Consolidate learning from Unit 3 by completing a business-facing activity set by the tutor
  • Preparatory work for Unit 4, making use of prescribed materials
  • A focus on organisational culture

Coaching Within the Organisational System

The final session will focus on coaching within an organizational system, considering the different aims and focus of workplace coaching. It introduces the concepts of coaching scheme design and ways in which organizational coaching can be supported.

By the end of this live session, your employees should be able to:

  • Recognise different dimensions of coaching
  • Identify and describe the stages of coaching scheme design
  • Relate coaching scheme design to their own organization
