On a Significant Deployment, HMS Prince of Wales Departs
HMS Prince of Wales, the flagship of the Royal Navy, has set sail on one of its largest deployments to date. The operation is known as Operation Highmast.
Remarkably, the £3 billion aircraft carrier departed Portsmouth and will participate in drills that will show the UK's capacity to conduct massive military operations across the globe and fly fast jets at sea.
The carrier, which delivers a multinational fleet of warships to 40 nations in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Australia, will be accompanied by up to 24 of the newest F-35B stealth jets.
HMS Prince of Wales: Capacity & Deployment
With a capacity of 1,600 military personnel, the 65,000-tonne warship will be in service for eight months.
Moreover, HMS Prince of Wales will join the Carrier Strike Group (CSG), which also consists of warships from Canada, Norway, and other NATO nations, as well as the Plymouth frigate HMS Richmond and the Portsmouth destroyer HMS
Dauntless.
The 809 Naval Air Squadron, The Immortals and the RAF's 617 squadron, popularly referred to as The Dambusters, will be on board.
Notably, Captain Will Blackett, the commanding officer, stated, “We've been practising, practising, practising. What we'll do, once we sail and get past the Isle of Wight, is embark the largest air wing that has ever been embarked on this ship ever. That's a complicated business.”
A Royal Navy spokesman confirmed that the ensign on the flight deck of HMS Prince of Wales was at half-mast as a “mark of respect” for the deceased Pope.

Leadership and Flexibility
The Defence Secretary, John Healey, commented: “I want to thank the thousands of our armed forces personnel involved in the delivery of this immensely complex operation, demonstrating the UK's world-leading capability to deploy a major military force around the world.”
He continued: “As one of only a handful of countries in the world able to lead a deployment of this scale, the Royal Navy is once again demonstrating its formidable capability while protecting British values and sending a powerful message of deterrence to any adversary.”
Along with the fighter jets, there are several T-150 Malloy and Puma drones, as well as sixteen Merlin and Wildcat helicopters.
In addition, the commander of the strike group, Commodore James Blackmore, stated that there was always a chance that the program would be altered due to the rapidly evolving global events and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. “Agility allows me at any moment to undertake other
operations if called upon,” he said.
Besides, Brighton Able Seaman James South expressed a mixture of excitement and trepidation. “It's the first very long deployment away from home for me, so I'm curious to see what that brings,” he stated.
Furthermore, Able Seaman Molly Plant, from Cornwall, said, “I think it's the most people we've taken away on a deployment. It's a bit of a tight squeeze, but everyone has a bed, which is good.”
Ultimately, the exercises will involve approximately 900 members of the British Army, nearly 600 members of the RAF, and 2,500 members of the Royal Navy.
All of them ought to return home in time for Christmas.
