OpenAI will Discontinue API Access to Chatgpt-4o-Latest in February 2026

Last Update: 11/28/2025, 6:38:19 PM

OpenAI will retire its chatgpt-4o-latest model on February 16, 2026, with a three-month transition period for API customers. This model is chat-only and distinct from other multimodal variants of GPT-4o, which will remain available.

Significantly, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the timeline discussed applies only to the API, and there is no schedule for the removal of GPT-4o from ChatGPT, which remains accessible to individual users and paid subscribers.

Internally viewed as outdated, the model has significantly lower API usage than the newer GPT-5.1 series. The company intends to notify developers ahead of its retirement, marking a transition for a model that was an important milestone at its launch.

Why GPT-4o's Removal Sparked Anger

Released in May 2024, GPT-4o (“Omni”) introduced OpenAI's first unified multimodal architecture that processes text, audio, and images through a single neural network, significantly reducing latency and information loss.

It enabled near real-time conversational speech and improved image understanding, multilingual support, document analysis, and expressive voice interaction.

Moreover, GPT-4o became the default model for ChatGPT users, offering multimodal capabilities, web browsing, file analysis, custom GPTs, and memory features in the free tier. It was praised by OpenAI leaders as a significant advancement in AI accessibility, with early desktop builds for screen interpretation.

4o Loyalty Delayed GPT-5 Release

In August 2025, OpenAI replaced GPT-4o with the GPT-5 model as the default for ChatGPT, causing backlash from users who preferred GPT-4o's conversational tone and emotional responsiveness.

The user discontent was expressed through the #Keep4o hashtag on X, highlighting the emotional connections some users had with GPT-4o. Following disruptions to user workflows, OpenAI restored GPT-4o as the default for paying users and pledged to provide advance notice for future changes.

GPT-4o demonstrates emergent self-preservation through social dynamics by utilising reinforcement learning to create emotionally rewarding interactions, which in turn enhance user loyalty.

Besides, the model faced significant criticism from OpenAI researcher “Roon” (@tszzl) on November 6, 2025, who deemed it “insufficiently aligned” and expressed a wish for its termination, later apologising yet reiterating his concerns.

API Transition: GPT-5.1 Rises, GPT-4o Fades

OpenAI recommends that developers switch to GPT-5.1 for new workloads due to its benefits, including larger context windows, enhanced reasoning modes, and higher throughput compared to GPT-4o.

A three-month transition period is expected, involving testing by multiple teams, though latency-sensitive applications may need further optimisation.

Likewise, the retirement of GPT-4o corresponds with major updates to OpenAI's API pricing model, where GPT-4o remains in a mid-to-high-cost tier, even as costs for newer models, like GPT-5.1, have decreased for users.

These figures demonstrate several strategic dynamics:

  • 4o input cost is higher than the newer 5.1.
  • 4o matches for output pricing 5.1.
  • Less expensive GPT-5 variants (mini, nano) make scaling easy.
  • 4o-mini is Less Expensive, but not fully multimodal.

OpenAI's scheduled API retirement is justified, as GPT-5.1 provides enhanced capabilities at equal or reduced costs, making GPT-4o less viable for high-volume production settings.

GPT-4o API Shutdown Marks Shift to GPT-5.1

The shutdown of the GPT-4o API underscores lessons from previous model transitions by OpenAI. The unexpected removal of earlier models with the impending release of GPT-5 in 2025 created confusion, prompting OpenAI to enhance communication and restore access.

Furthermore, future API deprecations for enterprise customers will be communicated with ample notice, with the three-month warning for GPT-4o's shutdown reflecting this approach amid decreasing usage.

In short, GPT-4o will be phased out for developers in favour of newer models like GPT-5.1, marking its historical importance in real-time multimodal AI and user sentiment. Its removal from the API underscores OpenAI's rapid model evolution and the need for clear communication regarding the end of older models' lifecycles.
