Sora, an AI video-generation model, generates high-definition video clips based on a user-input scenario, comparable to OpenAI's DALL-E image-generation tool.
Plus, Sora can create video clips from still photos, extend existing films, and complete missing frames.
In February, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence firm unveiled Sora, which gained widespread recognition last year because of ChatGPT's viral success.
OpenAI's tool will be launched in the U.S. and most international countries, without additional cost. There has yet to be a timeline for Europe, the U.K., or other countries. It's included in existing ChatGPT accounts like Plus and Pro and features “Blend” with the ability to make AI-generated videos endlessly repeat.
Sora is currently primarily used by a select group of safety testers, known as "red-teamers," who scrutinize the model for potential vulnerabilities like misinformation and bias.
Vitally, OpenAI's product chief, Kevin Weil, has emphasised the need for model perfecting, safety, and scaling computing to ensure the Sora release date. Additionally, Rohan Sahai, Sora product lead, highlighted the company's goal to prevent illegal technology use while balancing creativity.
OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in its latest $157 billion funding round, with a $4 billion revolving line of credit, increasing its total liquidity to over $10 billion.
Besides, the company plans to compete with Amazon-backed Anthropic, xAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon for the largest share of the generative AI market, predicted to reach $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
OpenAI has hired its first CMO and launched a search feature within ChatGPT to compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing, and Perplexity.
Moreover, the company is aiming to compete with video-generation AI tools from companies like Meta and Google, which announced Lumiere in January.
Similar tools are available from startups like Stability AI's Stable Video Diffusion and Amazon's Create with Alexa, which specialises in generating prompt-based animated children's content.
In addition, video could be the next frontier for generative AI, as chatbots and image generators enter consumer and business sectors. However, AI-generated deepfakes have increased by 900% annually, raising misinformation concerns.
OpenAI aims to expand its AI model suite by incorporating multimodality, which involves text, image, and video generation.
Notably, protesters have leaked a copy of Sora, a ChatGPT tool, due to concerns about OpenAI's treatment of artists. Members of OpenAI's early access program, including around 300 artists, published an open letter criticising OpenAI for not being transparent or supporting the arts beyond marketing.
Furthermore, OpenAI's artist program, involving hundreds of artists, has been criticised for its limited compensation. In a published open letter, they suggest that while AI can be used for arts, the program's rollout and preparation before public release should be improved to make OpenAI more open and artist-friendly.
In simpler terms, an OpenAI spokesperson has stated that hundreds of artists in alpha have shaped Sora's development, prioritising new features and safeguards. Participation is voluntary, and OpenAI offers free access and supports artists through grants and events.
