Hurricane Milton Sweeps Florida: Widespread Destruction and Tragic Losses

Residents across Florida woke up to devastation as Hurricane Milton left a trail of destruction, claiming at least six lives.

Making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near Siesta Key in Sarasota County on Wednesday night, October 9, 2024, Milton unleashed powerful winds, spawned several tornadoes, and brought torrential rains.

The storm also generated 28-foot seas and a destructive storm surge, leading to widespread flooding and damage throughout the region.

Rapid Tornado Formation Causes Tragic Losses

Twelve tornadoes formed in the area in less than 20 minutes, resulting in the deaths of four residents of a retirement community in St. Lucie County due to hurricane-related tornadoes.

A crane collapsed into The Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg due to violent winds, and Tropicana Field baseball stadium's roof is still in poor condition.

Moreover, Florida has had a power outage in over 3.3 million homes and businesses, with the west-central area being most severely affected.

Following landfall, Milton has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane and is currently circulating off the east coast of Florida, where locals are still struggling with intense gusts and surges.

Furthermore, Hurricane Milton's hurricane-force winds pounded the state, causing fallen power lines to spark fires. Multiple reports regarding structure fires that had started on the Lee County Gulf Coast Island were handled by the Matlacha and Pine Island Fire Control Districts.

Procedures for Safety and Evacuation

Before Milton made landfall as a powerful Category 3 hurricane on Florida's west-central coast on Wednesday night, millions of inhabitants were told to evacuate their homes.

However, Floridians who disregarded the instruction received a chilling warning and were instructed to label their limbs with personal information so that authorities could identify their remains.

Even after Hurricane Milton made landfall less than 12 hours ago at Siesta Key, the storm surge is still too severe for the deployment of emergency personnel across Sarasota County.

Besides, following Hurricane Milton's landfall, the police chief issued a terrifying prediction to anyone who ignored the evacuation advisories, saying their bodies may be found before daybreak.

The National Hurricane Centre reported that Hurricane Milton is approaching the east coast of Florida and that locals should prepare for "damaging" hurricane-force winds, torrential rainfall, and storm surge.

The NHC said that sustained wind speeds are still 85 mph and that Category 1 was located around 10 miles northeast of Cape Canaveral. Storm surges up to four and five feet high might affect the St. Johns River and Altamaha Sound. Four more inches of rain may completely submerge the east coast.
