The Deming Cycle or Deming Wheel PDCA, developed in 1947 by William Edwards Deming, a godfather of quality, has been a consultant to several successful companies, including General Electric America and Toyota Japan.

Deming is one of the reasons for Japan's success and excellence in quality, and the Deming Wheel is one of the critical concepts in continuous improvement.

 

What's the concept of the Deming cycle?

A quality wheel, a Deming wheel, or what is also called a PDCA wheel, consists of four phases, namely, (plan?do?check?act), which are used to improve processes, services and products in an orderly and structured manner in the company's continuous improvement processes.

Deming developed fourteen principles aimed at building an integrated business system that advances the performance quality of the company. The principles underlying Deming's philosophy are as follows:

1- Deming emphasises formulating primary objectives and harmonising them with secondary objectives, improving company products and services.

2- Design improvement and development programmes through the Deming PDCA wheel (plan?do?check?act).

3- The quality of the strategy cycle from the beginning of its design is a staple of the Deming PDCA wheel.

4- The Deming Mechanism for Continuous Improvement recommends that pricing quality is more important than height or decline.

5- Adopt staff training for upgrading as an investment rather than an additional cost.

6- Effective and open communication with staff.

7- Coordination between administrative leaders, supervisors and staff at work.

8- Working as a team and solving problems collectively.

9- Adopt statistical methods for continuous improvement at all stages.

10- Increase performance through effective networking between staff and their supervisors.

11- Linking production success to quality rather than quantity.

12- Make available the tools and possibilities to notify staff of comfort and productivity.

- Deming is more focused on results than operations.

- The application of stages is on teamwork, making the individual evaluation of staff difficult.
