AMD & OpenAI Declare Strategic Partnership

Several generations of AMD Instinct GPUs will power OpenAI's next-generation AI infrastructure thanks to a six gigawatt deal that AMD and OpenAI announced yesterday Initially, AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs are expected to be deployed at 1 gigawatt in the second half of 2026.

OpenAI's groundbreaking research and developments in generative AI, along with AMD's robust leadership in high-performance computing systems, placed the two businesses at the forefront of this significant and transformational period for AI.

Overview of OpenAI-AMD Collaboration

OpenAI and AMD will collaborate as a key strategic compute partner under this final agreement to propel extensive AMD technology deployments, beginning with the AMD Instinct MI450 series and rack-scale AI solutions and continuing into future generations.

Notably, beginning with the MI300X and continuing with the MI350X family, AMD and OpenAI are expanding their multi-generational hardware and software partnership by pooling technical expertise to optimise respective product roadmaps.

The entire ecosystem is advanced and very large-scale AI deployments are made possible by this relationship, which benefits both businesses.

Moreover, AMD has provided OpenAI with a warrant for up to 160 million shares of its common stock, contingent upon achieving specific milestones to align strategic interests. Additional shares will become available as purchases reach 6 gigawatts, with the first shares vesting upon an initial deployment of 1 gigawatt.

Vesting is subject to AMD hitting certain share-price goals and OpenAI reaching the technical and business benchmarks required for extensive AMD implementations.

A Benefit for Technology and AI

“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale,” stated Dr Lisa Su, AMD's chair and CEO. “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win, enabling the world's most ambitious AI build out and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”

According to Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, this partnership increases compute capacity to unlock AI's potential, with AMD's high-performance chips accelerating progress and making advanced AI benefits accessible to all.

Likewise, Greg Brockman, co-founder and President of OpenAI, emphasized the importance of collaboration in developing AI, stating that partnering with AMD will enable scaling and providing AI tools for global benefit.

Further, AMD's partnership with OpenAI is projected to generate significant revenue and enhance shareholder value, as stated by Jean Hu, EVP, CFO and treasurer of AMD. The agreement is expected to positively impact AMD's non-GAAP earnings-per-share.

In closing, with this collaboration, AMD and OpenAI are accelerating the future of high-performance and AI computing by fusing world-class invention and execution to provide the infrastructure needed to satisfy the world's expanding AI demands.
