Maritime sustainability experts analyze GHG data to accelerate net-zero transition goals.

The Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC), which comprises Ro-Ro carriers and other stakeholders and accounts for about 80% of the global car carrier fleet's transport capacity, has created the GRC Council (GRCC).
This council oversees the GRC's operations. ClassNK, which acts as an independent verifier for the GRC, has also played a crucial role in establishing the GRCC by contributing to the development of its operational foundation, including the creation of the Governance Framework and data handling rules.
Notably, establishing the GRCC has created a governance framework for the ongoing review and enhancement of emissions accounting methodologies and data management.
This framework aims to provide reliable and transparent GHG emissions data for Ro-Ro carriers, cargo owners, and vehicle manufacturers, thereby advancing emissions management and decarbonisation efforts throughout the supply chain.
Additionally, it is expected to improve the transparency of environmental information and foster decarbonisation across the industry.
ClassNK will support the decarbonisation efforts of shipping companies, cargo owners, vehicle manufacturers, and other stakeholders by promoting emissions accounting based on reliable primary data, leveraging its expertise as an independent verifier.
Growing demand for reliable primary emissions data is fuelled by initiatives like FuelEU Maritime and the IMO's greenhouse gas reduction measures. In response, the GRC was established in 2024 to enhance collaboration among Ro-Ro carriers and cargo owners.
Moreover, it aims to improve greenhouse gas emissions accounting's accuracy, transparency, and comparability, with participation from stakeholders accounting for about 80% of the global car carrier fleet's transport capacity, working towards a unified emissions data platform.

As activities have grown, challenges in maintaining and improving methodology, managing data handling rules, and ensuring transparency in decision-making processes have increased. The GRCC, as a self-governing body of carriers and verifiers, oversees the continuous review and enhancement of the GRC Methodology, data handling rules, and related governance documents.
Through these efforts, the GRCC aims to enhance carriers' communication of environmental performance, support effective Scope 3 emissions management, and improve decarbonisation strategies among cargo owners and vehicle manufacturers. Furthermore, it seeks to increase the transparency of environmental information across the supply chain.
ClassNK, as an independent verifier since the establishment of the GRC, offers verification services for GHG emissions data following the GRC Methodology. This initiative promotes transparent and consistent emissions accounting using verified primary data, thereby fostering a reliable emissions data foundation for the Ro-Ro sector.
ClassNK contributed to the establishment of the GRCC by developing the GRC Governance Framework and data handling rules and preparing maritime legal documentation.
Beyond that, Mr. Hiroshi Ochi, General Manager of ClassNK's Green Certification Department, was elected Vice-Chair of the GRCC, reflecting ClassNK's significant role in the governance framework's operation.
